European stock markets closed higher on Friday (October 16), supported by gains across nearly all major sectors. The Euro STOXX 50 rose 0.6% to 6,204, while the STOXX Europe 600 climbed 0.7% to 644—marking gains in five of the last six sessions.
The banking sector served as a key driver, benefiting from bond yields remaining lower than in the previous session, which eased pressure on borrowing costs. Shares of ING and Deutsche Bank both rose by 1.5%.
UniCredit shares also jumped 1.4% after the European Central Bank approved an increase in the Italian bank’s stake in Commerzbank. This approval paves the way for potential further corporate action between the two institutions.
Stocks linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure also recovered, even as the U.S. technology sector faced continued pressure. ASML rose 1%, while Siemens Energy gained 2%, signaling that investor interest in the AI theme remains intact.
On a weekly basis, the Euro STOXX 50 rose 0.4%, while the STOXX Europe 600 climbed 2.0%. The market continues to weigh positive corporate earnings prospects against the risk of high inflation, which could still influence the direction of interest rates and the valuation of European stocks.
