Solid Gold Berjangka – The US Dollar Index (DXY) traded relatively flat around 101.500 on Monday (October 19) after failing to sustain earlier gains. The dollar initially found support from increased demand for safe-haven assets, driven by social unrest in France; however, this momentum was tempered by concerns regarding the outlook for artificial intelligence (AI) investments in the United States.
Pressure in Europe intensified as the yield on 10-year French government bonds climbed toward 4.85%—not far from a more-than-two-decade high of around 5%. This rise in yields occurred against a backdrop of protests over the cost of living in France, which subsequently spread to Lisbon and Milan, heightening regional market uncertainty.
While these conditions briefly boosted the dollar’s appeal as a safe haven, anxieties surrounding the AI sector capped further gains. The market has begun to question the sustainability of the massive investment cycle within the technology sector, particularly as AI-related stocks have come under pressure, raising concerns regarding valuations and financing.
Market participants are assessing whether the US economy’s reliance on AI investment could pose a risk to the dollar should this cycle begin to slow. Diverging from typical "risk-off" patterns, pressure originating from within the US could drive investors toward Treasury bonds—pushing yields lower—while simultaneously diminishing the dollar’s attractiveness relative to other major currencies.
Regarding monetary policy, the market continues to anticipate that the Federal Reserve will maintain current interest rates at its meeting later this month. This expectation has been reinforced by several Fed officials who see no immediate urgency for further rate hikes. Consequently, the future trajectory of the DXY will depend on developments in AI sentiment, Treasury yields, and US economic data. (srh)
