European stocks weakened again in Tuesday’s (Oct 20) trading session. The STOXX 600 index fell 0.51% to 636.32 points, following an earlier 0.8% decline. The pressure stems primarily from growing concerns regarding the political and economic situation in France.
France’s CAC 40 index also dropped 0.41% as protests—which began over the weekend—continued. The unrest has further weighed on investor sentiment toward the Eurozone’s second-largest economy.
The political situation in France is a point of concern, as the country faces weak economic growth and mounting government debt. Local authorities have even imposed curfews in several cities, including Paris, Lille, and Nice.
Investors are also exercising caution ahead of a vote on France’s draft budget. Uncertainty regarding future government policy has led investors to question the attractiveness of exposure to European assets, particularly as political risks intensify.
Conversely, some stocks managed to gain ground following corporate earnings reports. OVHcloud surged 7.9% after posting positive free cash flow, while Comet Holding rose 4.1% on the back of increased sales driven by data center expansion and AI infrastructure. In contrast, ABB fell 5.3%, despite recording a quarterly order high.
Market attention has now shifted to comments from European Central Bank (ECB) official Olli Rehn regarding the direction of monetary policy. Investors anticipate that the ECB will hold interest rates steady at its October meeting, while the market continues to weigh the possibility of a rate hike in December.
Newsmaker Analysis: European stocks are likely to remain under pressure in the short term; a combination of unrest and political uncertainty in France, fiscal risks, and high oil prices may prompt investors to adopt a more defensive stance. If the political situation in France continues to deteriorate, the pressure could potentially spread to other European markets, while high energy-related inflation may also limit the ECB’s room to loosen policy.
