Solid Gold Futures – Global gold prices faced renewed pressure during Asian trading on Tuesday (Oct 27), following a limited rebound in the previous session from a three-month low. XAU/USD managed to hold near the psychological level of US$4,000 per troy ounce, as market participants adopted a cautious stance ahead of the Federal Reserve’s meeting outcome on Wednesday.
Gold is under pressure due to a strengthening US dollar and a recovery in US government bond yields. Although Fed officials have previously signaled no rush to raise interest rates, the market still assigns an over 80% probability that the US central bank will hike rates again at its December meeting.
Inflationary concerns, driven by high energy prices, continue to sustain expectations for monetary tightening. Investors are now awaiting the Fed’s policy statement and comments from the Fed Chair following the meeting—notably, there are no updated economic projections on the agenda this time.
Beyond the FOMC, the market is also looking ahead to the preliminary US third-quarter GDP figures and the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index. These data points will offer further insight into the trajectory of inflation and economic growth, while also influencing the outlook for interest rates, the US dollar, and the short-term movement of gold.
Geopolitically, tensions in the Middle East continue to provide limited support for safe-haven demand. Stalled US-Iran negotiations, recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure, and the potential for renewed conflict between Hezbollah and Israel keep regional risks elevated. Nevertheless, as long as the US dollar and bond yields remain strong, the pressure on gold is likely to persist. (srh)
