Solid Gold Berjangka - Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller believes that political pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump could pose a threat to the central bank's independence. However, Waller emphasized that, thus far, such pressure has not succeeded in altering the Fed's freedom to determine monetary policy. He made these remarks at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum 2026 on Tuesday (Oct. 13).
Waller considers the Fed's independence crucial to ensuring that interest rate decisions remain grounded in economic conditions, inflation, and financial stability, rather than political interests. He also expressed confidence that the U.S. Congress and the judiciary would continue to play a role in safeguarding the central bank's independence.
These comments come as markets await U.S. inflation data to gauge the future direction of interest rates. Waller had previously noted that further interest rate hikes might still be necessary to bring inflation back toward the 2% target, though the timing would depend heavily on evolving economic data.
Beyond monetary policy, Waller also highlighted developments in artificial intelligence (AI), noting their potential to boost productivity and per capita GDP growth. However, the scale of investment in the AI sector is also a point of concern, as a sudden slowdown in technology spending could heighten volatility in global financial markets.
For the markets, concerns regarding the Fed's independence could increase sensitivity to any statements made by central bank officials. Uncertainty surrounding political influence on interest rate policy has the potential to trigger volatility in the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, while gold could gain support as a safe-haven asset. Nevertheless, the market's short-term direction remains largely driven by inflation data and expectations regarding interest rate policy. (srh)
