The euro weakened slightly against the U.S. dollar in trading on Thursday (October 22, 2026), amid growing global economic and geopolitical uncertainty. The EUR/USD pair traded near the 1.1229 level, down approximately 0.03% from the previous session. This relatively limited movement reflects investor caution ahead of monetary policy decisions from the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank (ECB) next week, while inflationary risks stemming from high energy prices continue to cloud the economic growth outlook for the eurozone.
Pressure on the European single currency is further compounded by mounting concerns regarding France’s fiscal situation and political instability in several other European nations. Meanwhile, the high cost of living remains a major concern for the public, driven by rising prices for food, energy, and household essentials over the past few years. These conditions suggest that while the rate of inflation has slowed, it has not fully alleviated the strain on purchasing power—a factor that could hinder the recovery of domestic consumption and broader economic activity in the region.
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have added another layer of uncertainty for the euro, with Brent crude oil prices climbing to around US$110 per barrel. As a region heavily reliant on energy imports, Europe faces the risk of rising production and transportation costs should oil prices remain elevated. This scenario could trigger fresh inflationary pressure while simultaneously slowing economic growth, leaving the ECB in a difficult position regarding the direction of its interest rate policy. The market currently anticipates that the ECB will hold its benchmark interest rate steady at 2.50% at its upcoming meeting.
Looking ahead, investors will be closely monitoring the Federal Reserve’s decisions on October 27–28, as well as the ECB’s policy stance, to gauge the divergence in interest rate trajectories between the United States and the eurozone. If the Fed maintains a tighter monetary stance than the ECB, the US dollar could gain support, thereby limiting any strengthening of the euro. Conversely, if the ECB signals more aggressive policy tightening—or if pressure on the US dollar intensifies—the euro may find momentum for a recovery. Given these conditions, the EUR/USD pair is expected to remain volatile ahead of the decisions from both central banks. (CP)
