Solid Gold Berjangka – The pound sterling has strengthened, climbing above US$1.34 to reach its highest level since mid-September. This gain comes as investors position themselves ahead of a Bank of England (BoE) decision, with the central bank widely expected to tighten monetary policy further this week.
The BoE is anticipated to implement its first interest rate hike since 2023 this Thursday, driven by mounting inflationary pressures—exacerbated by the conflict involving Iran—and the continued resilience of the UK economy. However, the central bank is also expected to signal that any subsequent rate hikes next year will not be overly aggressive.
Meanwhile, a decline in oil prices has exerted renewed pressure on the US dollar. Uncertainty surrounding the US midterm elections, set for Tuesday, has also prompted investors to exercise greater caution regarding the movements of major currencies.
Separately, the first budget presented by UK Chancellor John Healey largely aligned with market expectations, offering no major surprises. Consequently, investor focus has shifted back toward the BoE’s monetary policy.
Oil prices also weakened following reports that President Donald Trump is prepared to allow more time for diplomatic efforts with Iran, deferring any consideration of further military action until after the US midterm elections. (srh)
