Solid Gold Berjangka – The euro traded relatively flat at around US$1.12 against the US dollar on Monday (October 26), remaining near a multi-month low. Investors are largely holding back ahead of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) policy decision, as well as a series of inflation and economic growth data from the Eurozone that will likely dictate the direction of the single currency.
The ECB is expected to keep interest rates unchanged at this week’s meeting, amid signs of slowing economic momentum. Since the interest rate decision is already widely anticipated by the market, investor attention will be focused on the ECB’s policy guidance to gauge the possibility of further tightening in December.
The Eurozone’s growth outlook is also weighing on the euro. Gross domestic product (GDP) data, due for release on Friday, is expected to show a slowdown—impacted by a summer heatwave, low water levels in key transport waterways, and rising global bond yields, all of which are dampening economic activity.
Meanwhile, the inflation picture across the region remains mixed. Fuel tax incentives in Germany and easing price pressures in Spain are expected to help contain inflation, though high energy costs and France’s fiscal situation remain risks that investors are monitoring closely.
In the United States, the Federal Reserve is also expected to maintain interest rates this week. The market is currently factoring in the possibility of interest rate hikes by both the ECB and the Fed in December; therefore, the future direction of the EUR/USD pair will depend heavily on incoming economic data, inflation trends, and policy signals from both central banks.
