Solid Gold Berjangka – Japan’s Nikkei 225 index plummeted by as much as 4.84% to reach the 60,030 level during Wednesday’s trading session (November 4)—its lowest point in five months—before paring some of those losses. The primary pressure stemmed from a sell-off in technology stocks, fueled by persistent concerns regarding the sustainability of the investment rally in artificial intelligence (AI).
The Japanese market also tracked a decline in U.S. stock futures, as preliminary election results drew market attention toward a potential shift in control within Congress. Investors have begun to factor in the possibility of a change in policy direction, particularly concerning the technology and AI sectors.
Market anxiety centers on the potential for stricter AI regulations and increased scrutiny of technology firms. This is a major concern for the Japanese market, as several key listed companies have significant exposure to the global expansion of the AI industry.
Technology stocks and AI-related companies led the decline. Kioxia Holdings fell 5.4%, Advantest dropped 3.4%, Tokyo Electron retreated 3.4%, Taiyo Yuden plunged 8.3%, and SoftBank Group declined 3.2%.
In the short term, the Nikkei is expected to remain sensitive to sentiment within the global technology sector and developments in U.S. policy regarding the AI industry. As long as investors continue to question the valuations and profit outlooks for AI investments, high volatility in Japanese semiconductor and technology stocks is likely to persist. (srh)
