Solid Gold Berjangka – Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell 1.3% to close at 64,075 on Tuesday, hitting a one-month low. The pressure stemmed from concerns regarding the scale of spending in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector and high borrowing costs, which once again weighed on technology stocks.
The movement in the Japanese market also stood in contrast to the rebound seen on Wall Street in the previous session. Local tech stocks remained vulnerable to sell-offs, particularly those with significant exposure to AI-related investments and financing.
Several major stocks saw sharp declines: Kioxia Holdings fell 3.4%, SoftBank Group slumped 6%, Taiyo Yuden weakened by 5.1%, Fujikura dropped 6.5%, and Tokyo Electron retreated 2.6%.
The pressure also extended to the financial sector, with Mitsubishi UFJ falling 3.7%, Mizuho Financial weakening by 5%, and Sumitomo Mitsui dropping 3.9%—indicating that investor concerns are not limited solely to the technology sector.
On the corporate front, the credit-default swap spread for SoftBank Group climbed to its highest level in nearly four years. This rise reflects growing market apprehension regarding the company’s financing requirements for AI expansion and potential large-scale acquisitions, further intensifying pressure on both the stock and broader market sentiment in Japan.
