Solid Gold Berjangka – European stock markets edged higher in Wednesday’s (Oct 21) trading session, attempting a recovery following two consecutive days of declines. The STOXX 50 index rose 0.2%, while the STOXX 600 gained 0.1%, buoyed by positive sentiment from corporate earnings reports in the United States and Europe.
Market optimism was bolstered by the performance of U.S. corporations—including financial results from SpaceX and 3M—which helped improve global investor sentiment. Meanwhile, market participants are also awaiting a series of quarterly earnings reports from major European companies to gauge the resilience of the corporate sector.
EssilorLuxottica emerged as one of the top performers, surging more than 11% after the company reported third-quarter revenue that exceeded market expectations. Shares of ASML Holding also climbed by approximately 2%, providing further support to the technology sector.
Conversely, shares of Carrefour plummeted by more than 10% after the retailer lowered its profit forecast and cut its capital expenditure plans. The company cited ongoing domestic turmoil and soaring energy prices as factors weighing on consumer sentiment and the outlook for household spending.
Despite the rebound, gains in European markets remained limited as investors continued to monitor risks related to economic growth and high energy costs. The future direction of the market will likely be heavily influenced by the quality of corporate earnings, trends in domestic consumption, and energy price movements across the region. (srh)
