Solid Gold Berjangka – European stock markets edged higher in Wednesday’s (Nov 4) trading session, supported by a surge in shares of Novo Nordisk. Investor sentiment remained cautious, however, following preliminary results from the U.S. midterm elections, which indicated a strengthening position for the Democratic Party in Congress. The STOXX 600 index rose by approximately 0.3%, while Germany’s DAX gained 0.25%, France’s CAC 40 climbed 0.3%, and the UK’s FTSE 100 added 0.4%.
Novo Nordisk shares jumped nearly 6% after the company reported third-quarter operating profit that beat expectations and raised its full-year sales and profit forecasts. This performance provided a significant boost to the healthcare sector and helped keep major European indices in positive territory.
Market sentiment was also influenced by developments in the U.S. midterm elections. Early results showed the Democratic Party making gains in the race for Congressional seats, while the contest for the Senate remained a focal point. For export-oriented European companies, a shift in the political balance in Washington could impact the direction of trade policy, clean energy subsidies, and U.S. fiscal support for NATO and Ukraine.
The European technology sector also found support after a solid earnings report from AMD eased concerns regarding the sustainability of investments in artificial intelligence. Shares of ASML Holding, ASM International, STMicroelectronics, BE Semiconductor, and Prosus rose between 0.3% and 2%, recovering from previous sharp declines.
Investors are now turning their attention to the Eurozone’s harmonized inflation data, due for release later in the session. This data is critical for the future policy direction of the European Central Bank (ECB), which has maintained its deposit facility rate at 2.50%. A resurgence in inflation could strengthen expectations for a 25-basis-point interest rate hike in December, while comments from ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane will also be closely watched by the market.
